What happens on a photo-shoot?
It’s the day of your shoot!
Your outfits are ready and hanging up.
Props are cleaned and organised.
Hair and makeup is going smoothly (if this is something you’ve chosen!), and
We’ve got a beautiful plan + vision for your photoshoot, ready to go. Yay!
So what happens next?
On the day of our personal brand photo-shoot…
…you & I will meet at our planned location, maybe meeting IRL for the first time. Yay!
You’ll have brought everything you need with you, and will have been supported in the lead up with a personalised checklist from me, of things to bring along and get ready.
I may be travelling-light or arriving with a load of kit depending on the kinds of shots we’ve planned to create together, so while you’re finishing getting ready (or maybe having a chill), I’ll be setting up and/or familiarising myself with the location before we get started.
If you find yourself feeling a little apprehensive (or really very nervous!) about the session ahead, know that this is completely normal. It’s a brave step you are taking! For many of us, having photos taken can bring up lots of feelings. Know that I am here for all the vibes, honouring and acknowledging your humanity, and what this experience means for you.
(Alternatively, you might be very used to having your photos taken and take this session entirely in your stride, which is wonderful too! For some, being on camera comes very naturally, and for the rest of us (most of my clients included!), it does tend to get easier the more times we put ourselves in-front of it!!)
No matter how you’re feeling on the day…
We’ll take a few minutes before we start (if you would like) to centre ourselves, inviting some deeper breaths, finding ourselves in the creative bubble we are stepping into together. We’ll remember and realign with our intentions, our vision for the photos we are creating, and the energy we want to bring to your people through these shots… We’ll feel so clear about why we’re here, making these shots, the moves you are making in the next chapter of your biz, and get into the vibe we want your new brand photos to have!
This grounding moment gives us an anchor point to return to throughout the session, as we come back to our intention again and again.
Once we get started making photos…
…any nerves and awkwardness you might be feeling or have worried about coming through in the images will begin to soften and transform as we find our flow together. I’m here for your fullest expression, and will also direct you during the shoot as inspiration takes hold! (“oooh let’s try this!”)
You’ll find yourself beginning to feel more comfortable in front of the camera, bit by bit. You may even be surprised to notice yourself actually having fun! (This is pretty much always the case after the initial ‘aaah what am I doing having my photos taken!?’! Yes, this gets to be fun!)
And if you are feeling awkward for a bit, we’ll totally ALLOW that! It’s so normal to feel weird about photos, and rather than trying to push it down and tell fear and awkwardness to go away, I’d rather we work with it and THROUGH it, never making yourself wrong for feeling uncomfortable.
Again, I’ll gently guide us back to the intentions we have for the images, tapping into the power of the great work you are doing and the difference you are making as we bring that energy to the camera.
But, if you feel to - you are ALLOWED pull the silly faces! Shake out your hair and hands. Stretch, roll your shoulders. Dance! Blow raspberries when your face feels like it’s starting to freeze. Laugh!! Whatever helps you feel like you can be you… that’s what I’m here for and THAT’S what I want us to capture.
Obviously, you’re not an actual Clown for hire (although I love working with actors and clowns so please let’s do a shoot if you are!!!), so we’ll make sure we get all the non-silly photos - of course - but… the in-between, candid, fun shots can be GEMS as much as the composed ones, and your comfort, ease and inner confidence is my priority - so let’s do what we gotta do.
With all the pre-shoot preparation we’ll have done together, we’ll have a clear vision for our shoot and will flow through the schedule and shot-list I’ve created before the day. Depending on the length of session we’ve planned, we’ll probably be doing some outfit and location changes at various points.
I usually offer to show you the photos we’re capturing…
…on the screen not the back of my camera as we go. This is to share the excitement about what we’re creating, but also so that you can see them too!
Often, looking at the images as we go gives my clients a confidence boost as they see themselves looking SO GOOD.
It’s also helpful to check them in-case you spot things in the photos that are good to flag early on… the way your hair sits in a way you’re not loving, or an angle you particularly liked… it’s means we can tweak things to your liking and have a shared awareness of what you love and what’s really working.
If you’d rather not see the images as we go, that’s absolutely fine too! This is quite often the case, especially if it helps you to stay in your body and not in your head.
As we come to the end of our shoot…
…we’ll reflect on our original vision again, and check we’ve got everything we need as we bring our session to a close.
This is usually followed by YAYS! And clapping! And sighs of satisfaction that we did it! And hugs, if you like!
We’ll take a moment to celebrate a successful creative collaboration, and begin to gather our things. I’ll pack down, and we’ll come away feeling so proud of what we did and excited to see the final photos!

I hope this post leaves you feeling clearer and reassured about what to expect when we work together, and my approach to holding space on photo-shoots.
Let me know if you have any questions at all, as I can add more info to this post if you think it’d be useful!
You can also check out reflections my lovely clients have shared here for a better sense of what it’s like to work with me.
If you’d like to explore collaborating on your new photos, I’d love to hear from you!
Here is a link to book in a call. We’ll get to know each other and feel into the kinds of photos that will be most supportive and powerful for the next chapter of your work in the world.
